A Quota With No Pipeline

It’s planning season. Right now, businesses everywhere are building their 2027 plans. Revenue targets, headcount, and new markets. The numbers that everyone wants to hit. Look closely at most of those plans and one thing is missing that makes all the rest possible.

Here’s the thought behind most of those plans: “We will grow in 2027 by selling harder.”

Sales is where revenue shows up, so it’s natural to build the whole plan around it. Set the number, push the team, and close more deals. Growth, the thinking goes, is a sales problem. But that’s not completely true.

Sales creates customers.
Marketing creates the demand that makes customers possible.

Those are two completely different jobs, and the plan that forgets the second one is destined to fail. Your sales team is very good at turning interest into signed customers. What they cannot do is convert demand that was never created. When a buyer has never heard of your firm, the call starts cold and stays cold. When that same buyer already knows who you are, it is a different conversation even before anyone says a word. That awareness does not happen by accident. It is built on purpose, over time, by marketing.

A growth plan without a marketing plan?
It’s just a quota with no pipeline.

That is the gap in many of the 2027 plans being developed right now. The growth target is front and center. The plan to create the demand that the target calls for is not. So the number sits on the page with nothing underneath it, and by April everyone wonders why the pipeline is so thin. Well, it’s thin because demand was treated as something that would magically show up, rather than something you build.

The marketing that works is comprehensive. Not one channel, not a campaign you run when the calendar looks empty. A real plan that is every place where your buyers already are. Your website, your email, your social media, your content, and your search presence, all working together so your target audience knows who you are long before you pick up the phone.

Scattered effort produces scattered results.
A plan produces results that compound.

If your 2027 plan includes growth, marketing is not an option. It is the half of the plan that makes the other half reachable.
